Epic Stories of Life Change

HEAR DIRECTLY FROM APPRENTICES AND MASTERS

We’re honored to provide a place where individuals can learn and grow within a strong relational community.

Caleb Asch

Apprentice

My cohort is my second family, only without the emotional/historical morass that a blood family has. We are compassionate and supportive.

It’s unconditional love really. I really love those guys. My Master, A.D. Wheeler really is a master. (I spent 25 years in martial arts and 20 years in yoga and I have met and seen many “masters”) I’m 60 years old, and I found my real passion in life. This is pure joy. I mean real joy, different from mere happiness! I wake up early in the morning looking forward to jumping in the car to photograph the sunrise. Every morning, even on those when I teach early and can’t stop to shoot. This past Wednesday the sunrise was so beautiful, I called my buddy, woke him up and demanded that HE go shoot it! I stay up late post processing. I check in with the ongoing cohort chat 5, 6 times a day.

On my day off I drive to state and national parks, up the California coast, or walk around my neighborhood looking for things and people to shoot. I am a yogi so this is all a practice for me. Every time I pick up the camera. a glorious practice! The other day I was feeling ill and just holding my camera, I felt better.

And the ego trip of having my friends and family gape and marvel at my photos, and say sincerely “Who are you” like they had any idea, like I had any idea. My daughters look at me in a different way. So does my wife. Having success come to me effortlessly! I’ve always believed that you needed to struggle and “pay dues”. The offers for my work are coming in by themselves!

I’m having my first SHOW in June!

The humbling experience of knowing that “I’ didn’t take the photo, couldn’t have. One of the photos I took last week, I call it “Heaven” makes me cry when I sit with it. “I” didn’t take that shot, “IT” happened, I just held up the camera. (I’m so proud of it I included it below.)

I now have SOMETHING TO CONTRIBUTE to the world. Something beautiful .That is life changing!

I feel so grateful and blessed ALL THE TIME.

Thank you for being a big part of this.

Apprentice, Level 12

The most important realization so far has been recognizing and acknowledging my own value and the value of my work. I am slowly coming to terms with all the roadblocks I have put in my own way over the years. No longer blaming others for my failings and refusing to allow myself to feel powerless. My work is changing all on it's own. A truer more centered version of myself is slowly beginning to appear and so is it's reflection in my work.

Tricia Booker

Apprentice, Level 20

I’ve never had another professional photographer spend so much time with me, taking each image and analyzing its strengths and weaknesses.

It was so educational and inspiring!...I’d also received feedback from the apprentices, which was vital and helped me to fine-tune my photographs before the critique. Having others offer their candid opinions and honest viewpoints is invaluable to growing as an artist, and I’m so grateful to them for taking the time to comment.

Ron Clifford

Level 20 Master

Though I’ve been offering online mentoring in a similar way for over 2 years now, The Arcanum has brought this concept to a whole new level! What we end up with is something that goes way beyond a classroom, way beyond a video library and introduces the idea of an active online community (Cohort). This is a system of growing and “Leveling up” your skills in a measurable way in a safe supportive private community of like-minded people. The results are magnificent.

the Arcanum is...a place where you will be encouraged to go beyond your current creative outlook! A place to dream, experiment, and make great friends

The Arcanum is a portal of knowledge, a place where you can learn the art of photography from the best, a place where you will be encouraged to go beyond your current creative outlook! A place to dream, experiment, and make great friends. Thanks Karen Hutton and Ron Clifford for being the best masters any one can hope for, you are truly an inspiration!

Apprentice, Level 8

It's been parts encouragement, teaching, sharing, and fun. It may take me longer to make new works in the short term. Over time, I believe my work will better reflect me and what I want to say.

The path of the student is truly their own to define and excel at, as the Arcanum provides a framework for learning without rigid restrictions.

One year ago (today) I entered into with The Arcanum. At the time I accepted this path, I knew it was the right journey for me to embark on as the next step down the path of my photography passion (read: addiction). Little did I know, however, how much it would become an integral part of my life. It's a year later, I've made more friends than I could have imagined, have ingested a huge amount of knowledge I didn't even know I was missing, and have the distinct pleasure of guiding a wonderful and talented group of students along their own path through The Arcanum.

It's impossible to describe the experience, just as it is impossible to describe falling in love or the joy of parenthood. You can describe the breakdown and the mechanism, but not the emotions. It is truly a artistic journey like no other. For within the Arcanum you're exposed the resources you need to excel, caring companions that provide endless encouragement, and a safe environment that allows freedom of experimentation where both your successes and failures are rewarded alike (we certainly learn from both). And the best part of all, unlike every other educational system I've been involved with, is that the path of the student is truly their own to define and excel at, as the Arcanum provides a framework for learning without the restriction of a rigid syllabus tailored to someone else's goals for you; it's a true master and apprentice type of relationship. If you can imagine a system where you define your goals and are immediately given the tools you need to place those goals within your reach, you will have imagined the insides of The Arcanum. Now couple resource environment with a wide range of peers from all levels of experience that are providing constant feedback, encouragements and suggestions along your path and you will know that you can't fail to reach your destination.

Today, in celebration of this day, I got up early (not easy; my daughter's homework kept me up till midnight) and I went to shoot the morning sunrise over a local wetlands. I hope all of your days are as bright and wonderful as mine was today.

Apprentice, Level 18

The core of the Arcanum is the cohort, your group of peers who rely on your input in the preparation for your critique with your master. It is quid pro co – you will only get back as much as you give. If you are not prepared to provide meaningful feedback to their work, they are unlikely to give the same to you.

Molly Kate

Apprentice, Level 15

You can’t get enough of it. It keeps you going through rough work days, hard times, and those moments you just need a little boost.

Then as you dive into it a bit more, its more challenging, but you find that it’s so worth it. You are learning some pretty awesome things, you take more time to get it right. You slow down and take a second look at what you’ve got right in front of you. You realize the value of what you have and are a part of is possibly the greatest thing ever. You can’t get enough of it. It keeps you going through rough work days, hard times, and those moments you just need a little boost.

Toni McGee Causey

Apprentice, Level 13

...we’re all learning from each other, helping each other through our critique process.

Andy’s (A.D.) not only an excellent teacher, but he’s got a knack for choosing people with different skills, so we’re all learning from each other, helping each other through our critique process. But beyond that, they’re all just damned good people. It comes across, immediately, in the warmth and encouragement, and in the feeling that they genuinely want to help–and be helped.

Apprentice, Level 6

The Arcanum is an overwhelming passionate experience. It's like falling in love. You are busy doing whatever it is that you usually do, and then all of a sudden, BAM, you are hit by a freight train that turns your world upside down.

Joining the Arcanum has changed my life. I say that neither in jest nor lightly. My life is literally changing.

Joining the Arcanum has changed my life. I say that neither in jest nor lightly. My life is literally changing. I'm quitting one of my jobs at the end of this summer in order to free myself up more for my creative commitments, and that is a HUGE step in a direction I've wanted to move in for a LONG time. I'm making logos, looking at websites, talking to people I've never dreamed of talking to, hearing from people that they want to buy my (total crap) photos of their kids...it's all totally overwhelming but absolutely magical, and I'm trying to lean into it as much as I possibly can while also maintaining my energy levels so that I can, you know, walk and see and stuff. It's scary and wondrous and I am DEFINITELY on the edge of my comfort zone, I'd say, 6/7 days/week.
