Rodney Campbell

Level 20 Master

An IT person by trade turned to passionate enthusiast photographer by choice….

More than anything I'm a Landscape photographer with a particular love for Seascapes, Long Exposures and Night Photography.

I am a highly technical person by nature and for my IT work. I love photography – both because it can be highly technical and there is always more to learn & to master; but it also forces me to exercise the other (creative) side of my brain. This doesn’t come naturally to me and I’ve had to train myself to both see and work creatively. This is possibly also why I like the much slower and measured pace of landscape and night photography – I’m allowed much more time to contemplate and consider each and every shot – to perfect it in my mind before I take it, to show you the beauty in the universe as I felt it at that moment I took it.

Ron Clifford

Level 40 Master

I am deeply interested in connections. In the connection of my viewer to my images. In the connection I make with my clients and in the connection a viewer discovers beyond the "pretty picture". Art connects us to an experience.

I pursue both majestic landscapes and to reveal true character and beauty through portraits. I feel a deep connection to both the natural world and to people and I believe it's all connected. I believe we're all connected

One of my gifts is to help you reach in and grab hold of that which is uniquely you and encourage it to grow. I would love to help you on your creative journey. To see you overcome those frustrating creative obstacles and plateau's along the way. Think of me like a gardener of creativity and if you care to learn, I can show you how to uncover your own distinct creative voice so you can go on to capture and bring to life your own breathtaking and beautiful moments.

I believe we only truly reach our potential when we learn to help others. To lift each other up. We were made for community and family and in a certain way, that's what social networks do.
Nothing can compare to getting involved in building up another persons real life.

Gary Culley

Level 20 Master

I started my career in photography in the days of film and darkrooms. After beginning in the lab business I moved to commercial photography with my first studio, Gary Culley Studios. After working primarily in advertising photography, I combined forces with a pre-press house to introduce my clients to digital photography in 1993. Always quick to help others, my work with the Memphis Professional Photographers Guild took me to its Presidency where I was able to assist others in getting their businesses off the ground. Quick to answer questions on sets about the making of images or advising others with the technical aspects of photography, it was a natural to move to teach this amazing art-form.

During an eight-year tenure at Kodak, including stints as a Technical Specialist and Product Manager, Glenn became interested in education, both as a student and as a lecturer. As a consequence three tertiary level photographic qualifications followed including a Master of Arts (photography). At the same time Glenn began to teach, both in Australia and abroad, and as a writer for photography magazines.

Over the years Glenn’s passions for photography and travel have resulted in him visiting China, Tibet, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Argentina, Falkland Islands, South Georgia Island, Antarctica, Iceland, Greenland, France, Belgium, Austria, Russia, New Zealand and Australia.

Glenn’s exhibition highlights include being a finalist in the inaugural Felix H. His fine-art prints are collected at both private and corporate level.

With an avid interest in the ‘peoples of our world’, and a fascination for the way religion and cultural practices have become a central point by which society aims to both define and, often, separate itself from the natural world, Glenn’s photographs aim to reclaim some of the spirit which man made, modern society has been so successful at separating us from.

Wes Hardaker

Level 30 Master

I walk the world looking for things to show people about the things that were too small for them to easily look at, things that they passed by in their busy day, or places that are hard to reach or get to. I shoot to document the wonderful things I've come across in my life. I'm addicted to both light and to teaching. I deeply enjoy working with photographers and pushing them further along their personal path. I ask a lot of questions, because I want you to really think deeply about your goals, your work and how people view your work.

If you're interested in joining my starting Arcanum group or my S2 group, please reach out! See for my "Increased Focus Though Minimalization" track description.

Christian Meermann

Level 25 Master

As a teacher I can look back on 15 years of teaching the most diverse kind of learners. As a a photographer, of the last 8 years I have developed a strong affinity for monochrome photography. In The Arcanum I am now privileged to combine those two passions, photography and teaching, in a supportive and inspiring community. I value meaningful communication and so beside the exploration all things black & white in my cohort there is a strong emphasis on growing friendships.

Jennifer Moore

Level 30 Master

Being a Travel Photographer gives me license it gives me to shoot everything from dramatic landscapes to candid street portraits. I came alive as a photographer during my own time as Apprentice at The Arcanum. I'm a testament to how well this program works and I understand what you need to do as an apprentice to get the most out of it. My apprentices started out shooting a mix of Landscape, Travel and Street Photography. But that list has grown as they get more daring. Now you find everything from Light Painting to Fine Art and even some Portraits in the community. I've loved seeing this group elevate their work to win contests, get featured in regional publications and start selling their work for profit.

Kyle VanEtten

Level 40 Master

For me so much of photography is recapturing that childlike wonder which allows us to see beauty everywhere we go. In my photography, I strive to both be impacted by beauty itself, and then to create images that have that same impact on whoever sees them - to create photos that move people, and I love helping others learn to do the same. I love teaching others to see the world around them differently through their own unique lens, and to utilize techniques from out in the field shooting, to processing and sharing an image in a way that communicates vision and creativity. To make photos that tell a story to all who see it.

It wasn’t very long ago that I found myself in your shoes... just stepping into the Arcanum. I started at level 1 just like you would if you join, and worked my way through to level 20 and the Path of the Protégé to become a master. Having gone through this experience myself (and continuing to work through higher spheres in the Arcanum) has given me some unique insights that have helped me to really learn how to customize this learning experience to fit the individual challenges and obstacles you will face in reaching the next level in your photography - my goal is to help you go beyond what you ever thought was possible in your art in creativity, and to discover alongside you what unique things you as an artist have to say; then to mentor, coach, and encourage you to communicate those things with your photos.

I really do believe in this community and this model of life on life learning, and I believe it is the fastest way to improve your skills and grow in your confidence as an artist. I have been incredibly blessed to be a part of it - and I would love to play a part in your Arcanum journey as well!

Lee Varis

Level 20 Master

Lee Varis ,the owner and founder of Varis PhotoMedia, is a photo-illustrator working in Hollywood. He has been involved in commercial photography for the last 40+ years. He started working with computer imaging over 20 years ago after being introduced to the Quantel Paintbox system. Lee currently works with digital as well as conventional photography in conjunction with computer graphics to create images for use in advertising, commercial graphics and multimedia. His work has been featured on movie posters, video box covers, CD covers, and numerous brochures, catalogs and magazine articles. Lee´s creative imaging has been featured in National Geographic and Fortune magazines as well as numerous trade publications including: Photo-Electronic Imaging, Studio Photography, PC Photo, Rangefinder Magazine, Photo District News and Mac Art & Design. Lee has also been involved with consulting and training activities for numerous corporate clients. He conducted a series of imaging seminars for Apple Computers that took him around the country to most of the major metropolitan areas and is currently active in seminar programs with PPA, APA, ASMP, ICP, CPW, and LACP. He maintains close relationships with numerous hardware and software companies and is involved in beta testing programs.

Lee's latest book is "Mastering Exposure and the Zone System for Digital Photographers" a complete guide to both the technical and creative aspects of exposure in digital photography. This guide uses a combination of discussion, examples, and hands-on exercises that lead the reader through a progression of skills development covering the full range of photographic lighting situations. Topics covered include basic metering, outdoor and indoor available light photography, studio lighting, night, and low-light conditions, as well as advanced topics like high-key and low-key lighting, multiple light sources and HDR. In conclusion, the author shows how to use the Zone System, developed by Ansel Adams for film, with today's digital cameras to achieve stunning results with exceptional tonal range and clarity.

Perhaps his best known book is “Skin : The Complete Guide to Digitally Lighting, Photographing, and Retouching Faces and Bodies” with Sybex (now in a 2nd edition). This is a professional level how-to guide to all aspects of digital photography of people. The work offers intermediate and advanced Photoshop techniques as well as digital-specific photo techniques for digital photographers looking for the next level in expertise.

Lee wrote "Digital Photography for Creative Professionals" with Rockport Publishers in 2003. This is an examination of professional applications of digital photography for commercial graphic artists and art directors concentrating on workflow issues and creative solutions for graphics workgroups.

He has also written articles for Design Graphics, PEI, PC Photo, Rangefinder and Digital Photo Pro.

As a fine artist, Lee has been working on a series of images based on the Tarot. Current progress on this project is on display at:

Lee has developed a unique approach to photography that takes advantage of certain idiosyncracies of digital capture technology to create impossible lighting effects as part of his personal style. This intimate knowledge of digital image technology affects the pre-production process as well. Photo shoots are designed to take advantage of new creative possibilities as well as the time and cost savings that digital imaging provides. Images are often re-combined with digital painting and effects or with additional photo elements to create digital images that transcend the original source materials. After production, images can be delivered via the internet as digital files or output in any manner for use in various print, multimedia or display applications. Asset management is another service that can be provided; all digital files can be cataloged and stored for later retrieval using an approach customized for the clients needs.

Lee's strong background in conventional photography gives him a unique ability to develop digital imagery that has a more organic feel rather than the flat plastic look of much of today's digital artwork. With his ability to see a project from concept, through photography, digital enhancement and final delivery in a variety of mediums, Lee feels he can serve the advertising community in a truly unique way. The future of imaging, and specifically photography, is clearly digital. Lee has a firm command of both traditional and digital techniques, giving him a clear advantage over the computer technician who is not equipped to make creative judgements and the conventional artist who lacks the tools necessary to realize the digital future.
